Fruitwood Bureau

A superb Georgian writing bureau in fruitwood. Beautiful quality, with original brass handles and escutcheons, and original ogee bracket feet. Very good patina and wonderful rich warm mellow colour. English, circa 1740 to 1760.
It is very rare to see pieces like this in fruitwood since fruit trees do not normally grow large enough to provide the size of planks necessary (and the whole piece must be made from timber from one tree or the colour would not match).
With three long drawers and two half-width drawers above, flanked by decorative quarter columns.
Fitted interior with three drawers and three compartments to the right and an open section to the left. This bureau was probably and estate piece, and the open space on the left would have allowed extra room for working on large documents and plans. Two additional working drawers to top of interior.
42.5 inches high, 35.5 inches wide, 19.5 inches deep (108 cm high, 90 cm wide, 49.5 cm deep)
