17th Century Oak Coffer

Item Number

Oak Coffer 2070

A fine 17th Century oak coffer, with three panel top and three panel front. Carving to front panels features eight-petal roses, with lunettes above. An eight-petal rose was a symbol of rebirth and regeneration.
With two locks, which is a rare feature, indicating this coffer was probably used in a church. There would have been two separate key holders who both had to be present to open it. Both locks have keys and are in working order, which is even rarer.
Lovely warm medium oak colour and good patina. Interior features a candlebox.
23.5 inches high, 41.25 inches wide, 18.50 inches deep (60 cm high, 105 cm wide, 47 cm deep)
